Why Piedmont is the right place for a wellness retreat
Piedmont is the alpine north of Italy, where the country becomes mountainous, slower and quieter. The Langhe — its southern wine hills — is where the landscape softens into vineyards, hazelnut groves and stone villages. It is the rare Italian region that delivers gastronomy and silence in the same square kilometre.
Unlike Tuscany, the Langhe has not yet been polished smooth by mass tourism. Long stretches of road feel emptier. The local economy still runs on wine and food, not coach tours. For a wellness retreat — meaning a stay where the point is recovery rather than sightseeing — that matters. You can step out of the door without crossing a queue.
Your private wellness suite
The wellness offering at Villa Sorì is private and built around three elements: the sauna, the outdoor hot tub and the garden. You don't share any of them.
The sauna is a Finnish-style wood cabin, heated electrically, with room for four. You light it in the late afternoon; by sunset it is at temperature. The outdoor hot tub sits under open sky, with vineyards on one side and the hills of Alta Langa on the other. Stars at night. Mist on autumn mornings.
The garden is three thousand square metres of lawn, fruit trees and hazelnut. There are loungers on the deck, a hammock between two hornbeams, and a long path that goes down toward the vines. In summer the path becomes your morning walk. In winter, a short cold walk before stepping back into the sauna.
What a typical wellness day looks like
There is no programme — that is the point — but a real day at Villa Sorì usually goes something like this. Slow morning. Espresso on the terrace. A long walk down into the vineyards, half an hour out and half an hour back. A light lunch on the terrace, mostly from the local cooperative in Cessole. A book, a nap, a swim in the hot tub.
Late afternoon you fire the sauna. Twenty minutes hot, three minutes cold-shower, repeat. Then a glass of Alta Langa metodo classico — the local champagne-method sparkling, made within ten kilometres of the house — on the deck while the light goes orange.
Dinner happens either at Villa Sorì or at a trattoria within fifteen minutes' drive. The night ends by the fire, or back in the hot tub under the stars. By the third day you start to forget what day of the week it is. That is the success metric.
Yoga, massage, breathwork — by arrangement
If you want a structured wellness retreat we can arrange it. A local yoga teacher comes to the house in the morning. A massage therapist arrives in the afternoon with a folding table; she works on the terrace in summer, in the living room in winter. Personal trainers, pilates instructors and breathwork practitioners are also available within a short drive.
All of these are arranged on a per-stay basis, so the retreat fits your week — not a fixed retreat calendar. Tell us what you need when you enquire and we will build the schedule.
How to combine wellness with the wine country
Piedmont has the unusual virtue of being a wellness destination and a wine destination at once. Most guests find a rhythm: two slow days at the house, one day in Barolo or Barbaresco, one truffle or chef-led food day in autumn, one day at the Ligurian coast (an hour and ten minutes away), one final slow day.
We are happy to suggest the route and book the appointments. Direct booking with us means we plan around the body, not the bus.
Frequently asked questions
- Is the sauna at Villa Sorì private?
- Yes. The sauna is for the exclusive use of the guests staying at the house. There is no shared spa and no other guests on the property.
- Is the hot tub heated all year?
- Yes. The outdoor hot tub is usable year-round, including winter. In cold months we recommend short cycles between the hot tub and the sauna.
- Can you arrange yoga or massage on site?
- Yes. We work with local yoga teachers, massage therapists and personal trainers who come to the house. We need a few days' notice to coordinate availability.
- Is this a guided retreat or a self-guided stay?
- Villa Sorì is by default a self-guided wellness stay — the house is yours. We can layer in a teacher or therapist on request, but you set the pace.
- Is Villa Sorì good for a solo wellness retreat?
- Yes, especially mid-week and outside peak summer. The minimum stay is three nights and the house is fully private — ideal for a solo recovery week.
